Food hubs serve as central locations for food production, storage, and distribution. They strengthen the local economy by creating opportunities for entrepreneurship and community development while also supporting traditional food systems and practices and reducing the carbon footprint of long-distance food transportation.
What we’ll accomplish:
1.
Increase Access to Healthy and Culturally Appropriate Food: Many Native American reservations are located in rural areas with limited access to fresh, healthy food. Building food hubs can help to address this issue by providing access to healthy and culturally appropriate food for tribal members and reduce reliance on processed or unhealthy options.
2.
Economic Development and Job Creation: Food hubs can serve as economic engines for Native American communities by creating jobs and creating and supporting local food businesses.
3.
Environmental Sustainability: Building food hubs on Native American reservations promote environmental sustainability by supporting regenerative food production and reducing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance food transportation. This can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote ecological stewardship.
